Sacramento authorities are looking into a gunfire incident that unfolded on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the moment authorities were breaking up an unlawful assembly of several hundred people.
Before the Gunfire
Deputies were first dispatched to the Arden-Arcade park at about 6:30 PM on April 18 after receiving reports of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Soon after, a follow-up call was made describing a potential altercation happening at Howe Park.
Aerial units was sent to survey the area but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Even so, it was apparent that a crowd of several hundred had congregated at Howe Park without any permit or approval.
When the Shots Rang Out
Officers started clearing the unauthorized gathering by encircling the gathering and making announcements commanding attendees to leave immediately. Around 15 minutes were allotted for check here individuals to vacate.
Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition rang out. The sudden gunfire triggered a stampede. Officers quickly moved to looking for those injured.
Those Who Were Hit
Ultimately, four victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. Those injured — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their mid to late twenties — were rushed to area medical facilities. Emergency physicians indicated that two were treated for serious injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. As of last report, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento fire crews were called to the scene and helped care for the injured at the park.
Evidence at the Scene
The center of the incident was believed to have occurred near Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot store located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators discovered additional shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Projectile impacts were identified in the metal fencing bordering the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries suggested that a second shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. That Home Depot location was placed on lockdown during the incident. Crime scene personnel kept processing evidence for hours.
Detainees in Solano County
Reports confirmed via scanner audio indicated that a Kia connected to the shooting was contacted by law enforcement in Solano County. Four occupants were held for questioning. Deputies were dispatched to Solano County to bring the suspects back for questioning. Video reviewed at the scene made clear that two shooters had been involved.
